The Zoo (A Birthday Poem)

The Zoo

There once was a lady that lived in a zoo.
Do not be embarrassed, I’m thinking of you!
No, please do not argue. It’s perfectly true.
How do I know? I live in one too!

Our zoos are spectacular, as I’m sure you can tell.
The animals are smart, and they speak very well!
They have their own rooms, and don’t always obey.
That can be so frustrating, but they just came that way!

Our animals somehow do not stay the same.
Their shapes and their sizes are not how they came.
They get smarter and smarter each day that they’re here.
And sometimes it seems they were born without fear.

Some of our animals sing like a bird.
Others might shout when they want to be heard.
Some laugh a lot, though sometimes they cry.
And at your zoo and mine, time seems to just fly.

As zookeeper things can get really exhausting.
There always are things to be dusting and mopping.
These creatures we keep seem to want to be fed.
And sometimes it is hard to get them to bed!

We love them, and try not to cringe when they growl.
We will not give up and throw in the towel!
But we do need a break every now and again.
The question that we need to answer is, “When?”

A birthday seems just right to make an escape.
Maybe just after you’ve eaten the cake!
No matter just what you decide you can do,
A big happy birthday from our zoo to you!
